Italy switched to the Allied side after Mussolini was deposed. On 25 July 1943, the Grand Council of Fascism voted to limit the power of Mussolini and gave control of the Italian armed forces over to king Victor Emmanuel III. The next day Mussolini met with the king, was dismissed as prime minister and then imprisoned. A new Italian government, led by General Pietro Badoglio and Victor Emmanuel III, took over in Italy. Although they publicly declared that they would keep fighting alongside the Germans, the new Italian government began secret negotiations with the Allies to come over to the Allied side. On 3 September, a secret armistice was signed with the Allies at Fairfield Camp in Sicily. The armistice was publicly announced on 8 September. Although Italy had switched sides, Germany still had control of much of Italy and even had enough power to force a large part of the Italian army to choose between joining up and fighting with the German army or becoming prisoners of war and being shipped off to Germany to be set to forced labor to support the German war effort.
After the initial invasion of France by Germany the unoccupied part of France (known as Vichy France Lead by Marshal Pepin) became a German ally.
Russia was originally a German ally and helped the Nazis conquer Poland. But then Germany invaded Russian and Russia (Stalin) switched sides.
After the eastern front collapsed Bulgaria and Romania declared war on Germany but by that time nobody was listening to them anymore and Russia steam-rolled over them.
Thailand was primarily an Axis member but had a brief war with Vichy France over Vietnam which the Japanese quickly mediated. Near the end of the war Thailand had a change of government that played both sides, finally disarming the remaining Japanese forces in the country for the arriving British. The British, tired of fighting, opted to accept the new alliance.
