In 1818, the U.S. and the U.K. signed a treaty agreeing to mutually share the Oregon Country. In 1846, while James K. Polk was President, the U.S. and the U.K. signed the Oregon Treaty, giving the part from the Mexican border, which is today the California and Nevada borders, north to latitude 49° to the U.S. and giving the part north of latitude 49° to the U.K.
