Macau
Macau was a Portuguese colony and both the first and last European colony in China. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century and subsequently administered the region until the handover on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operates with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.
Macau is not a country, it is both the name of the Special Administrative Region of China and of it's main city. It lies across from Hong Kong in the Pearl River Delta. Macau was a Portuguese overseas territory from 1557 until 1999, nowadays it runs on a city state model with it's own flag, currency, laws, international border and official languages. (Chinese and Portuguese, plus the mixed creole called Patuá)

Macau
Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It is NOT a sovereign state. There was a period until 1999 when Macau was a colony of Portugal. However, after the handover in December 1999, Macau is now Chinese territory, although it still retains a high degree of self-government (the Central Government in Beijing only has jurisdiction over Macau's defence and foreign affairs)Portugal, until December 20th, 1999.
