Well there's the childrens game with the bouncing ball, which I couldn't find where it originated. Then there's the website game where you 'check in' when you go to places. The founders of that are from New York, but the game was launched in Austin, TX. (according to the foursquare website)
Foursquare is believed to have originated in the 1950s, although its exact inventor is not definitively known. The game evolved from earlier playground games and was popularized in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s. While there is no single inventor credited with creating foursquare, its development is attributed to various sources as it spread across schools and neighborhoods.
Both are geolocation based check-in games, but Foursquare came first and then Gowalla tried to take what foursquare had created and build off it to make it better, but foursquare is still better.
