One of my college professors said that a Native American group attacked a traveling group of black people. Only one person survived: a young boy. A group of white families heard him crying & took him in. What shall we name him? Since no one knew his surname they felt anyone could guess it. Guess was my professor's last name. But she never said where she heard the story of its origination.
