The settlers settled there first in 1626, but New York became a state July 26th, 1788.

The first Europeans to establish a colony in what later became New York State was the Dutch. They settled there in around 1613.
In the early 1600s, the Dutch settled in New York (I'm not sure why.), and after several years, the English took over.
The European country that first settled Manhattan Island was the Netherlands, specifically the Dutch Republic. The settlement was known as New Amsterdam and was established in the early 17th century. It was later taken over by the English in 1664 and renamed New York.

New York City (and part of New York State) was originally inhabited by the Native American Lenape tribe. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle New York City, in 1624.
