New York State
The Dutch from the Netherlands.
The settlers settled there first in 1626, but New York became a state July 26th, 1788.

The first Europeans to establish a colony in what later became New York State was the Dutch. They settled there in around 1613.
In the early 1600s, the Dutch settled in New York (I'm not sure why.), and after several years, the English took over.

New York City (and part of New York State) was originally inhabited by the Native American Lenape tribe. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle New York City, in 1624.
The Dutch first settled it and it was originally called New Amsterdam.
New York is a state in the country called the United States of America. It is also the name of a major city in the state of New York.
