Crete fought its own independence war from the Ottoman Empire and was independent from 1897 until 1908, when the Cretans themselves demanded that Greece annex them (very much in the way that the Texans demanded that the US annex their independent republic in 1836). The Greeks and Ottomans only agreed to this annexation in 1913.
