Hassium was discovered at Gesselschaft für Schwerionenforschung (Darmstadt, Germany); the town Darmstadt is situated in the German state Hessen. The Latin language equivalent of Hessen was Hassia.

And the name of the chemical element hassium is derived from Hassia.
