The only reason a country will colonize is to gain resources, money, cheap labor, enslave people, gain power, spread ideas, or to just explore. Maybe the land is plentiful with resources and people that you can use for labor and share your beliefs with, i.e. religion, but just happens to be far away. Or maybe it is just easier to colonize land far away from you because the chances are that lands closer are generally the same in military technology. Take Europe for example, most countries in Europe were world powers and held colonies during colonial periods, and why colonize lands near you, that basically have the same resources, people, ideas, etc.
