The first country to launch a satellite into space was Russia, under the Soviet Union. The satellite was 'Sputnik 1'. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. It's launch sparked a crisis within the US which precipitated the space race during the Cold War.

The Soviets also placed the first woman in space. They had a lot of firsts, but the United States had the first rendezvous in space, the first docking in space, the first men to the moon and the first men to land on the moon.
