God promised David an eternal kingdom. This is interpreted as being fulfilled through the Messiah. 2 Samuel 7:16.

And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

God promised David that his descendants throne will endure forever. But the Davidic line of Kings ended with Zedekiah.

Psalm 89

[34] My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

[35] Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.

[36] His seed shall endure forever, and his throneas the sun before me.

[37] It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.

Of course, as with many things in The Bible it is important to understand both the meaning and the context. The promise of an eternal kingdom does not relate to an unbroken line of kings, but to a spiritual kingdom which will nevertheless be unending. David's legacy despite his faults was that he had a heart which was repentant and sought God. Such people form part of God's eternal kingdom which has never ended.

Much also, in terms of fulfillment remains to happen in the future, as other aspects of the covenant are put into place.

Which time? Some of the covenants God has made include

  • God will not destroy the world by flood again.
  • Thou shalt have no other God before me.
  • If you wander through the desert for 40 years, I will allow you into the Promised Land.

Answer:

The covenant God made with the Israelites was that IF THEY OBEYED HIS VOICE (did what He told them to do), then He would make of them a great nation among all the nations of the world." (Ex.19:5-6)

"For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: but this thing commanded I them, saying, OBEY MY VOICE, and I will be your God, and ye shall be My people: and walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you." (Jeremiah 7:22-23)

It was God's reestablishment of their father Abraham's covenant with his children:

"...I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because that Abraham OBEYED MY VOICE, and kept My charge, My Commandments, My statutes, and My laws." (Gen.26:4-5)

In order to receive God's covenant, one must be so exceptional in the service of God, that one has become the kind of phenomenon that occurs only a handful of times in history. David was such a person (Psalms 89:4), as were also Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Aaron.

to love all Jews while holding them accountable for their sins

Answer:

The covenant (agreement) was for them to OBEY HIS VOICE.

"...Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagle's wings, and brought you unto Myself. Now therefore, IF YE WILL OBEY MY VOICE indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people: for all the earth is Mine: and ye shall be unto Me a Kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel." (Ex.19:3-6)

That was God's proposal. And Moses: "...laid before their faces all the words which the Lord commanded him. And ALL THE PEOPLE ANSWERED TOGETHER, and said, ALL THAT THE LORD HATH SPOKEN WE WILL DO..." (verses 7-8).

"And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, and be ready against the third day: for the THIRD DAY THE LORD WILL COME DOWN IN THE SIGHT OF ALL THE PEOPLE UPON MOUNT SINAI..." (verses 10-11).

And on the third day, the VOICE OF THE LORD spoke the Ten Commandments (Ex.20) in their ears, and that was the covenant between God and Israel.

There are three covenants. Two which God made with Abraham (Genesis ch.15 and Genesis ch.17), and one with Abraham's Israelite descendants in the time of Moses after the Exodus.Link: What about Noah's covenant?

  • 1) In Genesis ch.15, the Covenant Between the Parts:
a) God informs Abraham of future events (the Egyptian exile)
b) God promises the land of Canaan (Israel) to Abraham's descendants
c) The covenant is finalized through a demonstration of God's presence (see Genesis 15:7-9 and 15:17).

Link: More about Abraham

  • 2) In Genesis ch.17, the covenant of circumcision:
a) The promises of many descendants (17:2,3) and of inheriting the land of Canaan are repeated (17:8), but the main thing in this covenant is the promise that God will be the God of Abraham (17:7, 17:8).
b) God promises that Abraham and Sarah will have a son (17:15-16), whom they will name Isaac (17:19) and who will be the continuation of God's covenant with Abraham (17:21).
c) The covenant itself is manifested through circumcision, for Abraham and his descendants (17:10).

  • 3) The covenant between God and the Israelite nation (see Exodus ch.19 and ch.24), was made in the time of Moses, with Moses serving as the messenger.
Link: More about Moses

This covenant is one of obedience, to listen to God's voice (Exodus 19:5), which will include the entire Torah (24:12). God, for His part, promised to treasure the Israelites (Exodus 19:5, Deuteronomy 26:16-19). The covenant was manifested through God's giving the Ten Commandments (Exodus ch.19-20), and was finalized (on our part) through the offerings described in Exodus ch.24.
