Because the "backroller" is part of a recirculating current which can hold an object (you) against the face of the dam. If you approach too near the "boil line", even from apparent safety downstream, the current may pull you in (yes, pull you UPSTREAM) and you may never escape. Unwary boaters, fisherman, etc. drown in these currents every year, and many professional rescuers have lost their lives trying to save them.
