Modesto, located in northern California, is the 17th largest city in the state. A city that cares about its impact on the natural world around it, Modesto has been annually recognized by Tree City USA almost 30 times. Agriculture is big business in Modesto, with the region generating billions of dollars in agricultural production each year. Getting to Modesto is easy, with service from United Airlines into the Modesto City-County Airport from San Francisco. Amtrak's San Joaquin train stops in Modesto on its routes from Oakland and Sacramento to Bakersfield, and Interstate 5 runs through the city. There are a number of places of interest in Modesto for a visitor to the city. Some of these destinations are: McHenry Mansion and Museum The McHenry Mansion was built in 1883, and was the home of Robert McHenry, one of the first bankers in the area as it was being settled. It is one of the only residences from that time period that still stands, and is a fine example of Victorian architecture. Across the street from the mansion is the former Modesto Library, on land donated by the McHenry family. It has been converted into a museum showcasing artifacts from the early history of the region. George Lucas Plaza Before the Star Wars franchise launched his career to the star, George Lucas was best known for his movie American Graffiti. Though most of the movie was shot elsewhere in California, the setting of the movie was 1960's Modesto, and a bronze statue of Lucas, who grew up in the city, is the centerpiece of the plaza named in his honor. An annual festival honoring American Graffiti is held every June. Gallo Winery and Center For the Arts The Ernest and Julio Gallo Winery is based in Modesto and is the largest exporter of California wines in the state. The winery is largely credited for putting California wines on the map. The Gallo Winery is also the sponsor of the Gallo Center For the Arts, which brings a wide variety of entertainment such as musicians, Broadway productions, and other entertainment to the city.
