Blackbeard had been reaking havoc in the Caribbean and along the coast of the American colonies for couple years, but certain recent events and large raids commited by Blackbeard and his crew cause Governor Spotswood of Virginia to put his foot down and take serious action. Spotswood knew that Blackbeard was nearby and sent naval Lieutenant Robert Maynard after him. Maynard's crew caught up with Blackbeard and engaged them in a bloody battle. Blackbeard put up fight and might have won had he not been hung over or even still drunk from some piratical partying the night before. After no less than 20 stab and gun shot wounds, he fell dead on board of Maynard's ship. The members of Blackbeard's crew who survived the battle were brought back to land and tried for piracy. Most of them were found guilty and hanged for their crimes.
