"20th Century" is the designation for the period of 100 years that began on January 1, 1901, and ended on December 31, 2000. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1901 - 2000 The first year of the 20th century was 1901, and the last was 2000. Centuries are a hundred years long, but they do not start with years ending with 0 because there was no year 0. Popularly, however, the 20th century is treated as including 1900 and not 2000, because most people either do not know or do not care. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- There is some argument about this, based on the fact that the first century did not begin with the year zero, but with the year one, hence all following centuries could be imagined to begin with the year one of that century, so the 20th century could be said to begin on Janurary 1st, 1901. However, that flies in the face of common usage and numerical simplicity, so normally, we consider that the 20th century began on January 1st, 1900 and ended on December 31st, 1999. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Most people would say 1st Jan 1900, but a true mathematician would say 1st Jan 1901.
