Indigo flowers, were a popular dye in the late 1700's and early 1800's South Carolina made a HUGE profit off of this popular dye and was said to be the "only" thing to grow if you wanted money.
Rice was the primary cash crop in colonial South Carolina. Because it could be harvested twice a year, it retained it's status of lead cash crop for decades.
