Crops that are known to have been genetically modified are corn, soybeans, canola, cotton, papayas, yellow squash. Potatoes and tomatoes have also been genetically modified, but they are not openly being produced commercially for sale to consumers. Golden Rice is a genetically modified crop, and recently a GMO apple has been modified to reduce browning after being cut. Also, a GMO broccoli is being/has been released in the UK.
Spread of GMOs is the unwanted cross pollination of GMO crops with non-GMO and organically grown crops. Unchecked spread means that it is being allowed to happen without measures to avoid it being taken.
Organic crops are non GMO, but GMO crops of the same kind can cross pollinate with them, resulting in contamination of the organic crops.
This method is called genetic modified organisms. (GMOs).
GMOs can be found in crops, such as corn, soybeans, cotton, canola, papayas, wheat, acorn squash, Golden rice, and others; medicines, such as insulin; organic crops that have been contaminated by GMO crops, foods that include GMO ingredients, dog and other pet foods made with GMO ingredients, etc. Geographically, GMOs can be found in at least 85% of the corn and soyboans grown in the United States, crops in Canada, and crops in other countries that allow use of GMO crops.
One problem GMO crops pose for farmers who do not grow them is cross pollination of GMOs in non-GMO crops, especially those that are grown organically.

Organic and GM food is not exactly opposite, but foods that are grown and sold as "100% organic" cannot intentionally contain GMOs. It is possible, though, that cross pollination of GMOs with organic crops of the same kind could happen unintentionally.
When organic crops are pollinated with GMO crops, the GMO gene can become a part of the organic crop, so the organic seed for the following year contains the GMO. Technically, since organic crops are not supposed to have GMOs in them, this contaminates the organic crops.
There is no known information that indicates GMOs are easier to grown than non-GMOs.
It is opposed by some organizations and individuals because they are not convinced that the safety of the crops to the environment or human health has been proven, the regulatory process in the U.S. appears to have been influenced by those who develop and profit from the technology, etc.
There is no evidence that GMOs have improved food production.
Organic farming is a way of growing foods without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. It can be used anywhere a farmer wants to use it now and in the future. Organic farming is also GMO-free, but since GMOs are cross pollinating organic crops and more cross pollination is likely to occur in the future, it is possible that that all foods, including organic, will have GMOs in them in the future and truly organic foods that are free of GMOs will be lost.
