Antigua and Barbuda were colonized specifically for the production of sugar, but no serious attempts until 1632 when Edward Warner, and Englishman claimed Antigua for the English Crown. The early settlers cultivated cash crops such as tobacco, indigo, cotton, and ginger for export and subsistence crops for themselves. Within the years sugar became popular. During the production Antigua's landscape was formed into what it is today because vast areas of rain forest were cleared to make way for sugarcane fields. In 1728 there was a minor slave uprising and in 1736 a major slave rebellion was alleged ti have been uncovered. In 1834 slavery in Antigua and Barbuda was abolished but slaves were still not 'free'. Antigua and Barbuda then became independent November 1st 1981.
