the ice grazed the metal but the failure was due to the lack of strength in the iron bolts that held the bits of metal together. to save money they used iron instead of steel so immediatly the ship was doomed. the water tight bulk heads also had a huge impact as they were lowered weaking the entire ship. the bulk heads were lowered because of the demand for the ship being the grandest ship in the world so it had to have a huge sweeping staircase
At first, it was thought that the collision had cut open the metal plates of the ships hull, Some researchers now believe that the rivets that joined the metal plates of the hull were made of a brittle metal that could shatter under impact, and that the collision caused the rivets to break, which would result in large plates falling away from each other- producing a HUGE hole in the hull.
The iceberg rammed into the side of the Titanic, thus creating a hole big and deep enough for the water to seep in and sink.
It for sure wasn't a huge gash like people thought. with sonar technology we have found out that is was faulty riveting and when the Titanic struck the iceberg the pressure caused some of the rivet heads to ''pop'' therefor allowing the steel plates to slide off the other plates they were riveted to. kinda like this. please excuse the text photo.
...--..-...----.-.--.....-./-------this is the damage
-----------------------/ -------this is he bottom of the hull
bare with me here. this is a diorama of the hull of the titanic. the damage was kind of a Morris code look. it bumped across the hull
The iceberg ripped a gash in the side of the ship across several of the watertight compartments.
the bowe of the ship and it split it in half
An iceberg on the Altlantic Ocean Caused the fatal damage to the titanic.
Because the Titanic made a sharp turn trying to avoid the iceberg the iceberg scraped a long gash in and through the ship's side, which caused massive flooding. It has been argued by some nautical specialists that if the ship's crew would not have noticed the iceberg it would have rammed it head-on, causing damage that might have been much easier to contain and which would not have led to the sinking of the ship.
No. The damage was done by the iceberg.
An iceberg
Because. It got hit in the iceberg.

Very, very serious. An iceberg hit it! Well, maybe.

No. It sank because it hit an iceberg which caused bigger damage than the designers had ever expected.

Iceberg.
