the ice grazed the metal but the failure was due to the lack of strength in the iron bolts that held the bits of metal together. to save money they used iron instead of steel so immediatly the ship was doomed. the water tight bulk heads also had a huge impact as they were lowered weaking the entire ship. the bulk heads were lowered because of the demand for the ship being the grandest ship in the world so it had to have a huge sweeping staircase
