the ice grazed the metal but the failure was due to the lack of strength in the iron bolts that held the bits of metal together. to save money they used iron instead of steel so immediatly the ship was doomed. the water tight bulk heads also had a huge impact as they were lowered weaking the entire ship. the bulk heads were lowered because of the demand for the ship being the grandest ship in the world so it had to have a huge sweeping staircase

How serious was the damage caused by the accident of the Titanic?

Because the Titanic made a sharp turn trying to avoid the iceberg the iceberg scraped a long gash in and through the ship's side, which caused massive flooding. It has been argued by some nautical specialists that if the ship's crew would not have noticed the iceberg it would have rammed it head-on, causing damage that might have been much easier to contain and which would not have led to the sinking of the ship.
