40 days before Easter: March 9, 2011. This is a time of prayer and fasting for Christians to prepare them for the Central and most important day of our religion, Easter. Easter is the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. What makes Jesus different from all others is that He rose from the dead. His resurrection was prophesied, predicted and wrote about for centuries before in the Old Testament.

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday which will be March 9th in 2011 unless you are an Eastern Rite Catholic in which case it starts on Clean Monday, March 7th. It lasts until Holy Saturday the 23rd of April.

It lasts more than 40 days because Sundays are not counted. Each of these is a "mini-Easter".

Holy Saturday Lent ends at sunset on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Sunday). Lent lasts for 40 days but, for Christians, Sunday is always a day of celebration, so Sundays are not counted as part of Lent and you don't fast on them.

There are 46 days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. If you deduct the Sundays, you have 40 days of fasting in Lent.

Holy Thursday

According to "catholic.org" - Lent officially ends on Holy Thursday. That is when the "Triduum", great three Days of holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday occur leading to Easter. Easter is not only a day but an Octave (eight day) celebration leading to a Season of the Church, Easter Season, which ends on Pentecost.
