Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin 'piloted' the first manned spacecraft to orbit the earth, the Vostok-1, on April 12, 1961.
Yuri Gagarin was launched aboard Vostok I from the Baikonur Cosmodrome

in Russia, in April, 1961. His capsule entered low earth orbit, and he almost

but not quite completed one full orbit of the earth, returning to the surface

68 minutes after launch. He never again flew another space mission, and

eventually died in the crash of a trainer aircraft.
