KTKN went on the air in 1942. But the new owners at that time actually had purchased the tower and transmitter of Ketchikan's first radio station, KGBU, which was Alaska's 2nd radio station. KGBU originally went on the air in 1926, changing frequencies and upping power several times, ending at 900 kHz and 1000 watts by the time it went dark around 1940 or 41. One of KGBU's famous guest show hosts was author L.Ron Hubbard, in 1940, nwhile he spent several months stranded in Ketchikan when his boat broke down. KTKN's original KGBU tower blew down in 1968 during a Thanksgiving Day storm. It was replaced soon after with the structure that stands today. Interestingly, ten years earlier in January 1958, Ketchikan's only other AM station, KABI, was knocked off the air when it's tower toppled in high winds. KABI (580) had only been on the air less than 6 years. Instead of rebuilding their tower at Rotary Beach, the station's owner, Midnight Sun Broadcasters, bought KTKN, thus returning Ketchikan to a one station town until public station KRBD went on the air in the 70s.
