During Operation Dynamo - the evacuation of 338,000 soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk in early summer 1940. Only a tenth of that number were expected to be rescued but most of their equipment was left behind.
the soldiers atDunkirk were saved by the British navy aided by local fisherman from all over Britain. HMS Rodney played an important role. also the french rearguard allowed a lot of British troops to escape. the RAF couldn't do each as they were also retreating from Dunkirk mainly the British Navy constantly transporting troops across the channel under constant attack from the Luftwaffe
