There were 3 big ones (September 4th 2010, February 22 2011 and 2 on 13 June 2011. Although there have been dozens of other large ones (between magnitude 5-6) there have been well over 9,000 earthquakes/aftershocks to date. These still occur everyday and haven't ceased yet.

Christchurch and much of the surrounding Canterbury area wasdevastatedby a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of September 4th 2010. This was then followed by a shallower 6.3 magnitudeearthquakeon February 22nd 2011 that struck during the busy lunch hours.
The date of the event was Friday, March 11, 2011.
