The US No, sorry, not the US. France! The US was testing the hydrogen bomb on the island of Bikini at the time (1946), and the bikini was named for this, which may have led to the confusion. In fact, US women disdained the bikini until after 1960, when Jack replaced Ike as US President, Rock & Roll music became more acceptable in the US, and US society became more casual. Many new inventions can be credited to the US, but the bikini is not one of them. In case the question refers to the island instead of the swimsuit, Bikini is part of a country known as the Marshall Islands.

in the 1940s during WWII they needed to conserve cloth so they cut down the amount of cloth needed for a bathing suit, resulting in the bikini A Roman mosaic from Sicily which has been nicknamed the "Bikini Girls" depicts women of the Late Roman Empire wearing outfits very similar in concept to the bikini. The first bikini to be called such was in France in 1946, after WWII and when cloth was plentiful again. It was named after the US atomic bomb tests at Bikini Island in the same year. No models could be found who were willing to wear them, so French showgirls modeled the first bikinis. They were worn around the world, but women in the US considered them vulgar and did not begin to wear the bikini until the 1960's.
