On September 13, 1962, Deke Slayton called Neil Armsrtong and asked him if he would like to fly for NASA. Armstrong said "Yes" and his selection was announced to the public 4 days later.
Armstrong was part of the second group of astronauts selected. The "New Nine" consisted of Armstrong, Jim Lovell, Elliot See, Frank Borman, Jim McDivitt, Ed White, Tom Stafford, Pete Conrad, and John Young. See died before making a spaceflight. Armstrong, Lovell, Borman, Stafford, Conrad and Young all flew to the moon. Only Armstrong, Conrad and Young actually walked on the moon. The other 9 moonwalkers all came from later astronaut classes.
