Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on the same day, on the fourth of July, 50 years, to the day, after the signing of the Declaration af Independence, and Thomas Jefferson died first, but only by a few hours.
Jefferson died at his home, Monticello, on July 4, 1826 - fifty years to the day from the Declaration of Independence. He was 83. John Adams, a lifelong nemesis of Jefferson, died a few hours later on the same day.
To write the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson drew largely from two works, one of them his own, which was called "A Summary View of the Rights of British America." He wrote this document in 1774 and it was widely circulated amongst the Revolutionaries. The popularity of this document was one reason why he was chosen to write the Declaration. The second document he drew from was George Mason's "Virginia Declaration of Rights." This document was adopted unanimously by the Virginia Convention on June 12, 1776. It was put into the Constitution of Virginia and is still there to this day.
Thomas Jefferson took 17 days to write the Declaration of Independence, and the Second Continental Congress spent two days making some changes to the document. On July 4th, 1776, the Congress voted to accept the Declaration of Independence, which is why the United States celebrates that date each year as its Independence Day from Great Britain.
