It's commonly referred to as "Mid-Summers Night Eve" or "The Summer Solstice" and it usually happens on or around the 21st of June. This is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. From this day on the days get shorter and the nights longer until the Winter Solstice which is the other way around; the shortest day and the longest night of the year after which the days start getting longer and nights shorter.
The date of earliest sunrise and latest sunset varies from location to location over the world. After the first day of Summer (June 21st), each day starts to lose sunlight at the rate of of 2-3 minutes per day. December 21 is the day in which least sunlight occurs in North America.

20 / 21 December (winter solstice)
The shortest day of the year in North America is December 21. December 21 is the winter solstice, which is the day that officially establishes winter.
Since June 21 is the longest day of the year, we receive more sunlight on that day.
The summer solstice has the most daylight hours. Conversely, the winter solstice has the least amount. The spring and autumn equinox has an equal amount of day and night.
June 21st, the summer solstice.

No. The length of daylight is tied to seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere (US, Canada, etc) that longest day will be 21 Jun. However, in he Southern Hemisphere(South of the equator-Australia, South America, Africa, etc) that will be the shortest day of the year.
Longest/shortest day?? THen it is Alaska, because part of the state is inside the Arctic Circle.
The longest day of the year is the Summer Solstice, which normally happens on June 21 in the northern hemisphere and December 21 in the southern hemisphere. These dates can vary a day either way, depending on the cycle of leap years. Check the link below to see a list of solstices and equinoxes from the US Naval Observatory's web site "Earth's Seasons".
In the United States, the most hours of daylight (sunlight) is on June 21st, also know as the Summer Solstice. The Winter Solstice is on December 21st and is the shorted say of the year (or, the least hours of daylight). The two equinoxes are March 21st and September 21st which is the first day of spring and the first day of fall. In the southern Hemisphere though, everything is flipped so the Summer Solstice is December 21st, the Winter Solstice is June 21st, the Spring Equinox is September 21st and the Fall Equinox is on March 21st. This is all because of the Moon phases.
The Summer Solstice, which is the longest day of the year, generally occurs on June 21 each year, but this can vary a day either way depending on the cycle of leap years. (This is actually the SHORTEST day of the year in the southern hemisphere.) The reason is that the Earth spins on its axis, and the Earth also orbits the Sun. The orbital plane of the Earth's orbit is called the "ecliptic", and if the Earth's axis of rotation were "normal to" (meaning, at a 90 degree angle to) the ecliptic, then the Sun would always be over the equator and we would have no seasons - and the days and nights would always be 12 hours long. But the axis of the Earth's rotation isn't normal to the ecliptic; it is tilted at about 23.4 degrees. This "axial tilt" gives us our seasons. On June 21, the northern hemisphere of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun, as close as it ever does; the next day, as the Earth orbits the Sun, it starts to move a bit away.

June 21 is.
There are two answers to that, depending on your definition of the longest day. The summer solstice, on the 21st of June is the day with the most daylight and is generally considered to be the longest day. However, on the first Sunday of November, the clocks go back by one hour in the US, meaning that it has 25 hours, rather than 24, so it can be said to be the longest day. It can be on any date from the 1st to the 7th of November, depending on the year. There are two answers to that, depending on your definition of the longest day. About 14 hours of daylight. The US Naval Observatory's web site has a tool that will allow you to calculate the time of sunrise and sunset every day for a year, at the link below.
The winter solstice - around December 21 - the days then begin to get longer or "draw out" until The summer Solstice in June - for the Northern hemisphere - opposite in the Southern hemisphere
I believe they moved it to the first Sunday in November.
In the Northern Hemisphere it's June 21st. In the Southern Hemisphere it's December 21st.(See the Related question regarding the longest day in 2010.)The day of a summer solstice
Days never get shorter, they are always the same length. We do, however, lose a few minutes of daylight each day from June 21 to December 21. It's hard to say exactly how many minutes because it depends on one's latitude. Somewhere around 3-4 minutes for those of us in the continental US, I'd guess.
