The day tends to be seen as a getting together of family and friends for a formal dinner. The meal often is held during the lunch or late lunch hour. So that tends to exclude formal evening dress. At its most formal, it instead may include Sunday best dresses or outfits for females and suits for males. At its most informal, it may include sweaters with blouses and skirts or slacks for females and with slacks for males.
