In Germany, 6th of December is a very important day for children. On the evening of 5th December, children leave outside a boot or shoe outside their bedroom door, hoping that Saint Nicholas will fill it with presents.
Also, Saint Nick was a bishop who lived in the 4th century.
He will only fill your shoe with presents if you have been good.
For bad children, Saint Nick has a helper, Knecht Ruprecht. Instead of presents- Ruprecht fills the shoes with dry branches.
(Ps- In the UK kids hang out stockings. If you have been good he will fill up with presents- if you've been bad you'll get a lump of coal.
French children used to put their shoes by the chimney, or under the Christmas tree, for the Père Noël (Santa Claus) to fill them with presents.
Santa, or Sinterklaas, travels on a horse. Kids leave out their shoes with gifts for the horse and they are replaced with presents.
