Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. On September 3, 1939 Britain and France declared war against Germany. The Soviet Union invaded Poland on September 17, 1939 as per the agreement of the non-aggression pact between the USSR and Germany.

Hi my grandfather is from Gdansk Poland and he told me how the war began:

September 1st 1939 on 4.43 AM, Gustav Kleikamp, captain of the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein, ordered the attack on Westerplatte (Gdansk, Poland). A few minutes later, stationed in the Gulf of Gdansk (Poland) German battleship makes the first salvo in the direction of Polish ammunition depot on Westerplatte. World War II began, war which cost the lives of 62 million people.

However, according to some historians, it is not at Westerplatte, but in Wielun (Lodz province, Poland) started the war. Three minutes before attack on Westerplatte, over the Wielunia peninsula, German bombers appeared, leveling to the ground 75 percent of the city land in which there was no military installations.

September 1st, Friday at 4.45 AM, without declaring war, Hitler's troops are flown to Poland. Begins with the bombing of cities, Navy ships bombard the coast. Throughout the German-Polish border Germen army commenced attacks. Polish Air Force, effectively prevents the German bombing of Warsaw.

September 3rd, Sunday Westerplatte still defends itself. Ongoing raids on Warsaw. Polish troops are losing the battle of Mlawa. Army "Cracow", "Pomerania" and "Lodz" retreat. Polish Allies declares war on Germany, at 12 PM United Kingdom, 5 hours later, France. Over the next few months neither France nor England did take military action against the Germans.

September 6th, Wednesday, Polish government flees Warsaw. Defenders of Westerplatte keep defending assaults from German troops.

September 7th, Thursday at 10.15 AM, Westerplatte's exhausted crew surrendered. German army occupies Okecie (near Warsaw) and also occupies Italy. Ongoing bombing of Warsaw.

September 17th, Sunday, under the secret Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact the Soviet army entered Poland from the East. Germany occupied Lublin, a Polish government evacuated to Romania. Fights near Bzura delayd the Nazis march on the capital.

September 24th, Sunday, talks are underway with the Soviet Union about the conditions of surrender. The Russian Party ensure about "their peaceful intentions." Warsaw no longer has power or drinking water. Germany dropping Propaganda leaflets, urging the defenders to surrender. Bombing intensifies.

September 28th, Thursday, after a heavy assault on Warsaw General Kutrzeba and General Blaskowitz signed capitulation. Three-week defense of Warsaw came to an end.
