Napoleon studied at several French military academies. He learned French (he was a native speaker of Corsican) and was particularly skilled at mathematics.

His skill at mathematics meant that he underwent training at the Ecole Militaire to become an artillery officer. He graduated in 1785.

At the age of 10 he was sent to a religious school in Autun (in France) to learn how to read and write the French language. In that same year (1779) he was admitted to the military academy at Brienne-le-Chateau. After this education, in 1784, he was admitted to the elite Ecole Militaire in Paris, where he studied artillery and graduated in 1785.
