Most record producers (also called "sound engineers") attended school to learn the art (and it is an art) of producing records. Some may have begun as musicians or even disc jockeys, but today, in order to be a professional producer, you have to learn how to use some very complicated pieces of studio equipment, and you have to be able to create a certain sound that will help the performer to have a hit.
There are some schools that offer certificates or even degrees in sound engineering, where you will not only study and learn how to use the equipment, but you will work in a recording studio and gain valuable experience watching how the professionals do it. While you are deciding on the right program of study, you may want to find a recording studio and see if they need any help. Working in the industry is a good way to find out if it's the right career path for you.
Historically, the entertainment industry has never had any hard-and-fast rules regarding qualifications. Based on what a producer does, however, degrees in business and Music Theory couldn't hurt.
You don't have to have a degree. You just have to be able to make a good movie. If you want to be hired as one instead of being and independent movie producer though, it is up to the client.
