It is very tricky to become an engineer. you need to get straight A's every year of your life. Then you need to eat 778 jars of pickle and Oranges and then you must go to Texas A&M and only then can you become a mechanical engineer
Mathematics is the primary tool of the mechanical engineer. Being comfortable with physics (the mechanics side of it, not E&M) can be helpful, too.
