Electric cars have been around for decades. The advances in these cars over the past few years though has been remarkable. The technology changes have been in two main areas. The drive units for motors are far more efficient today then even a few years ago. This means that we can do more with the limited power we have available from the batteries.
Battery technology has also come a long way. Batteries are now able to hold larger amounts of energy pound for pound compared to even a few years ago. This is allowing electric cars to go up to twenty or more miles with no charging.
A side note to the whole issue is our defining an electric car has also changed. The new cars being introduced carry gas engines on them to charge the batteries. This would not meet the definition of an electric cars a few years back.
Solar panels for charging cars are still on the wish list for practical options. Solar panels are far to inefficient to provide the energy required to power a car any reasonable distance.
