What is the difference between market share and sales volume?
Market share refers to the portion of total sales that a given company has, so if your company sells half of all the particular product that is sold by anybody, then you have a 50% market share. Sales volume is the actual amount, such as for example, $100,000 in sales. Or $100,000,000 as the case may be. Knowing the market share does not tell you the sales volume unless you also know what the total market volume is.
Asked in Stocks
Does a company profit from increases in its share price?
Short Answer: No In the stock market you have a primary market and a secondary market. When a company goes public shares are initially sold on the primary market. During the IPO a company benefits from a high share price in that this is the capital that they will receive to fund their operations. After the initial IPO the stock begins trading on the secondary markets. In the secondary market the company does not directly profit from fluctuations in share price. The only exception being that a corporation would receive a benefit due to increase share prices in relation to any additional offerings or secondary stock offerings. The company will benefit from the higher share prices allowing the company to raise capital relatively cheap.

What is relative market share?
Answer Relative market share is comparing market share of a company with that of its next biggest competitor. Having a relative Market share of >1 means you are the market leader that outperforms the next biggest by this factor. A relative market share <1 shows how far away you are from being the market leader. So in other words, the relative market share enables a firm to know the dominant strategy to adapt when competing with its number one competitor in the same industry in terms of product pricing and profit making.
