These included Humanism/Perspective which applied a three-dimensional appearance on a two-dimensional object. Sfumato, a toning down process demonstrated in 'Mona Lisa'. Chiaroscuro which used strong contrasts of light and dark. Fresco which was a form of mural painting on new lime plaster. Foreshadowing which created an illusion of objects receding in the background.
