That probably depends on whether you believe in destiny. If you do, what happened to them was their destiny. You don't say, "I believe it was Romeo and Juliet's destiny to become one of the most famous circus acts in Europe, but of course that never happened." If it had been their destiny, it would have happened.

Destiny is an entity which does not require to believe or not on it. Future events are subjected to many factors which are beyond our management and/or intervention. Destiny is simply a future fact that is going to become true on this or that manner. However, if someone is acting improperly, destiny should be renamed to "consequence".
