He was the first to discover it- he crossed the Isthmus and saw the huge Pacific (He didn't name the Pacific though-Ferdinand Magellan did). Heck, America was named after him! (The cartographer Waldseemüller was apparently the first to put America on a map, and that was what he named it- America.)

Because America wouldn't have been named after Amerigo Vespucci if he didn't discover it. However Columbus was the first to find it but he wasn't completely sure so there for Amerigo gets the credit because he was sure it was a different continent.
