Andrew Freedman was a real estate speculator and bondsman who bought the New York Giants back in 1895. He was reputed to be a mean and overbearing man and during his time as owner the Giants had 23 managers. In 1902, he hired John McGraw away from the Baltimore Orioles of the new American League. Freedman sold the team to John Brush in 1903 and got out of baseball entirely.
