I do not know which one you are asking about, since the president was inaugurated twice. But let me address the first one, from January 20, 2009. When a new president takes office, he usually looks back on where the country has been, addresses whatever challenges face the nation, and then tries to give the audience some hope that these challenges will be dealt with and that America will continue to make progress.
President Obama began by acknowledging in that first speech that "...we are in the midst of crisis"-- he was referring to the economy, which had fallen into a recession before he took office. He went on to name other problems: "Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age." But he then reaffirmed America's greatness, saying the country would recover from the economic crisis and defeat the terrorists. He pledged to lead the country in a positive direction and he invited all Americans to work with him to make the country a better place. I enclose a link to his first inaugural speech, so that you can read it in its entirety.
This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous and powerful nation in the world. Our capacity remains undiminished. Starting today we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin working on rebuilding of America....
Thank you for making me president and i love the the Americans
