Franklin was in Philadelphia when he did his first scientific work. Specifically, in 1751, on population growth in the British colonies. He calculated that, within a century, there would be more people in North American British colonies than in Great Britain.

Interestingly, the 1860 U.S. Census (31.4 million) and the 1861 U.K. Census (28.9 million) showed that Franklin's predictions were not far off.
