Well first when America was trying to get independent from Great Britain, we call for the French help but they didn't help because they wanted to see if we deserved the help, so they said that if America would win a major battle they would help, and basically that what happen we won a huge battle at Lexington if I'm right because I don't remember the place and then the French gave us their help.
The Colonist called themselfs Americans because they were independent from Britain when they signed The Declaration of Independence. Actually they were called americans because they were colonized in the Americas
