Historians have no idea. They aren't sure today that the story we know about Columbus is true. Many think he was a Spanish noble who took on a persona to be able to get funds from the crown because his family were rivals of the crown. He spoke and wrote only in Spanish ( strange for a man who was suppose to be Italian), was married to a Spanish noble woman ( a poor man wouldn't have been able to marry nobility). There is no way for us to know about the lives of people as children since no books could be published, most people didn't read or write, and other devices like the camera weren't invented.

Christoper Columbus is not a saint. St. Christopher, by legend, carried a child across a river. The child later revealed himself as Christ. In that way, St. Christopher became the patron saint of travelers. The real St. Christopher may have lived during the 4th century, B.C.
