After Caesar died, Cleopatra hurried back to Egypt (she was in Rome at the time). She eliminated her enemies, her brother/husband included and sat back and waited to see what would happen in the aftermath of Caesar's death, and then to determine her course of action.

After the death of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra VII of Egypt became the lover of Mark Antony. In his secret will Mark Antony made what historians have called the Donation of Alexandria which would proclaim Cleopatra co-ruler of Egypt as Queen of Kings and Queen of Egypt together with Caesarion, the son she had with Julius Caesar (who was to be renamed Ptolemy XV Caesar) who would be made King of Kings and King of Egypt. The three sons he had with Cleopatra were to be made king of Armenia and northern Iraq (Alexander Helios ) king of Syria, Lebanon Judea and Jordan (Ptolemy Philadelphus) and king of Libya (Selene).

Octavian (later he was called Augustus) found an excuse to declare war on Cleopatra as a means to fight Mark Antony, whom he knew would help her. This was the final power struggle of the Roman Republic. The forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated in 30 BC and both committed suicide (separately). Octavian became the sole ruler and in 27 BC he became the first Roman emperor as Augustus.
