Because Darry loves Pony and doesn't want him and Soda to be put in a boys home, but can only do so much to take care of him when Pony doesn't use his head, so he gets mad so Pony doesn't risk the boys home situation again. Also, Darry is a very stern guy, so it is hard for him to have a good relationship with Ponyboy, like Sodapop and Ponyboy do.

∙ 12y agoDarry is so hard on Ponyboy because he just wants him to become a good kid. Greasers are what they are known as. They are known to be low lifes and not very good at keeping good hygiene. Darry is the successful one who wants to be outstanding and doesn't want his little brother, Ponyboy, to turn out any different.
