He was the youngest of about fourteen children. His father was a teacher of humanities subjects, but lost his position when he became blind and his mother restarted the family glass factory to keep the family going. But when Mendeleev was 13 his father died, and shortly afterward his mother's factory was destroyed by fire. He started his High School education at the gymnasium in Tobolsk, but when the impoverished family relocated to St Petersburg he enrolled in a gymnasium there (gymnasium = high school). All in all, it could not have been a happy childhood.

His childhood was pretty bad if you ask me. He was the youngest of 17 kids. His dad died so his mom moved away with Dmitri so he could get an education. His mom struggled to get him through school.
