Each one of the five friends had dreams, requests, and wishes for which the Wizard of Oz's help was sought. Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto wanted to get back home to Kansas. The Tin Woodman wanted a heart. The Scarecrow wanted a brain. And the Cowardly Lion wanted courage. To each of her three friends, Dorothy explained that she was going to get help from the Wizard in solving her problem. She accepted their company along the way, and was willing to share her possibilities for a meeting with her and Toto's new-found friends.

According to the Cowardly Lion, the Wizard of Oz seemed to have the shape of a Ball of Fire. The Wizard in fact took on a different appearance for each of the separate meetings between him and Dorothy Gale, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman. The Lion subsequently found out that the burning ball wasn't really a burning ball of flames, heat, and light. Instead, the Wizard had poured oil over a cotton ball. The burning was so intense that the entire ball appeared to be of fire and nothing else.

As a Lovely Lady. According to author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919], the Wizard put on a beautiful dress of green silk gauze. Delicate wings were stitched on, so as to appear to be growing right out of his shoulders. He masked his head and face, so as to astound the Scarecrow with a jeweled crown and flowing green hair. Hardly! That would have been the most challenging of the Wizard's disguises. For Baum described the Wizard as short, with a bald head and very wrinkled face.

In the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz', the five friends at first weren't allowed to meet as a group with the Wizard. They had to agree to meet with him, one by one, on different days. Each one saw something different. For example, Dorothy Gale saw a huge head. The Cowardly Lion saw a ball of fire. The Scarecrow saw a beautiful woman who wore a green dress, had green hair, and fluttered delicate shoulder wings. The Tin Woodman saw an elephant sized beast whose head was rhinoceros like.
