The exact cause is unknown other than some type of illness of the lungs. Most likely it was pneumonia. In 1890, a family member, who was the daughter of the relatives who took in Poe's sister Rosalie after their parents died, recalled that Poe's mother died when she was sick with pneumonia. Some assume that the illness was tuberculosis, however, Poe's mother had no history of suffering from TB, therefore it is unlikely that TB was the cause of her death.
